Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health

Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health

Adolescence is the period of transition from childhood to adulthood, usually between ages 10 and 19 years. This is an important stage of growth and development in which physical, mental and social changes occur in an individual. Puberty sets in at this stage as well as the extension of relationships beyond parents and family to peers and the outside world. Adolescents become more curious and are prone to experimenting and having a quest for independence. They could be easily influenced by their peers and the outside world. Adolescence is a crucial stage in which informed decisions need to be taken by the individuals in order to protect themselves from occurrences that could either make or mar their future.

Treasure Jars Youth Centre addresses Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health by organizing Sexuality Education programmes for secondary school students in Osun. Sexuality Education aims to provide adolescents with information on puberty, reproductive health, relationships, affection, intimacy, body image and self-esteem, and gender roles. It is anticipated that our sexuality education programmes will equip adolescents in Osun with the required information and skills to make informed decisions at this stage of increased potential, yet greater vulnerability.

Programmes to address other Adolescent Health issues such as Tobacco Use and Drug Abuse are in the offing
